Szent Mihály napja a népi hagyományban a legkiemelkedőbb szeptemberi jeles nap. Mi sem mutatja ezt jobban, minthogy a hónap régi elnevezését is a mennyei seregek fejedelméről, Szent Mihály arkangyalról kapta. A franciák és a németek védőszentjeként ezen országokban számos hegy, vár, várkápolna, templom és városkapu őrzi nevét.

Mihály a haldoklók védelmezője, aki kíséri és átvezeti a lelkeket a másvilágra.

Szent Mihály napja a népi hagyományban a gazdasági év végét, a betakarítás befejezését jelzi, amikortól az idő valóban hűvösebbé, ősziessé válik. Ez a nap a kisfarsang kezdőnapja, amely november 25-ig, Katalin napjáig tart. Ez az időszak hagyományosan az esküvők, lakodalmak és bálok őszi időszaka.
